Lovania Nurseries of Tarleton in Lancashire have long benefited from the success of LS Systems Ltd over the past 20 years. The Nursery has predominantly grown salad crops in the greenhouses but had realised that change was essential in the late 1990’s.
A decision to take the business down the bedding plant market with a major supermarket chain offered an enormous challenge that LS Systems took on to help Lovania develop their potential. The latest growing techniques that were put in place helped take away the manual hose pipe watering of the crops.
In all the greenhouses the very latest technology was used in a watering design programme based on each crop. Darren McDonald used his irrigation design diploma skills to develop a 97% accurate watering system which was then automated. This watering system comprised of micro-spin sprinklers with anti-drip facilities in suspended spraylines. The outside rows of plants in the greenhouse also received special attention.
Automatic filtration was put into place used a sand and algae filtration system to cope with the re-cycled run-off water collected from the greenhouse roofs and yard areas. Finally a fertiliser and chemical dosing system was installed operated by means of an energy efficient variable speed pumping system.
