Barcham Trees near Ely in Cambridgeshire are one of the largest tree container nurseries in Europe and have over 120,000 trees growing on site each year.
About 15 years ago they introduced an innovation to growing trees by using a new lightweight growing bag which the trees stayed in rather than grown on in field conditions. This called for individual watering to each tree. Since the early 1990’s we have installed nearly 100 miles of pressure compensated non leakage drip lines with scheduled watering throughout the nursery to cope with the different sizes and varieties of trees grown on site.

Using water from mains supply proved costly and highly risky during the summer months and a decision was taken to bring the nursery up to a very efficient standard by the year 2005. 72,000 cubic metres of water per year is now self-contained in two reservoirs by means of our installed pump transfer system and automatic sand and algae filtration systems. Energy efficient variable speed pumps then distribute chlorinated treated water to 10 off 96,000 litre capacity water storage tanks. Automated watering up to 6 times a day by zone operated control panels with GSM text facility ensure minimum staff input is needed on this large scale project.
